School Programs

SportsCan offers three distinct school programs. Our Recess Program, After School Physical Literacy Program and our School Wide Workshops offer the fundamentals of sport to youth athletes.

Recess Program

The Active Start Program combines play and structured activities to get children active and involve in physical activity. The program is individualized to allow each child to develop at their own rate. The Active Start Program aims to establish a sound base of fundamentals movement and basic general sports skills so your child can move easily into any sport. The Active Start Program supports the development of fundamental movement skills in children aged 6-9 years in a fun and purposeful way. Fundamental movement skills provide a foundation for many physical activities including play, games, dance, outdoor recreation, and sport. Having these skills is an essential part of enjoyable participation and lifelong interest in a active lifestyle.

The myth that it “just happens” Although many children develop good physical skills on their own, there are many who do not. Physically skilled children often enjoy a vigorous healthy play, while the less skilled are often left out. This can lead to decreased effort and eventually withdraw from physical activities.

Our program develops the self-confidence needed to encourage increased participation in a wide range of sports and activities through improving ALL physical literacy skills

After School Physical Literacy Program

Research now shows that positive development is most likely when young people have diverse opportunities to explore and develop a range of physical, psychological and social abilities across multiple activities and sports. Participating regularly in a variety of sports and physical activities yield many documented physical, psychological and social benefits related to both short-term and long-term development and lead to future participation in both recreational and competitive sports. A key principle with this program is to provide parents with an affordable program that encourages healthy active lifestyles by introducing children to a wide range of sports. Our program focuses on the proper development of fundamental movement and physical literacy skills.

  • Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines
  • Teaching proper fundamental movement skills leading to enhanced physical literacy.
  • Implementing multisport programs

Develop fundamental movement and physical literacy skills with a focus on character development.

Our program provides the opportunity for participants to learn the importance of respect, fairness, cooperation, responsibility, acceptance, and perseverance through a variety of activities, games, and sports

  • Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines (5-11 years) For health benefits, children aged 5-11 years should accumulate at least 60 minutes of moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity daily. Both of our programs provide over 2hrs of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day! Instruction and activities are provided with appropriate progressions to ensure fun and success for all skill levels.

  • Canadian Sport For Life suggests that children should be playing 4 or more different sports to encourage the development of strong fundamental Movement and physical literacy skills. In using National Sport Organization’s Long Term Athlete Development Models and their modified gameplay, our participants are provided instructional play sessions by our trained coaches in sports such as Volleyball, Baseball, Basketball, Golf, Hockey, Soccer, Lacrosse, Athletics, and more!

  • It is important that children are instructed on how to properly perform the various fundamental movement skills and provided an opportunity to use them in a variety of environments to help optimize their physical literacy skills. At our SportsCan FUNdamental Movements Program, our trained coaches deliver individual and group based activities that allow for an optimal progression of various fundamental movement skills. The combination of our coaches training and carefully designed activities help optimize the development of physical literacy skills in each child regardless of previous skill levels.
