Saturday Youth Programs

Saturday Youth Programs offer programs for children ages 5 – 14. The aim of the program is to offer a physically rich environment that challenges their physical abilities by using expert instruction and activities appropriate for the child’s stage of development according to the Long Term Athlete Development Model initiative by Sport Canada.

Our early years programs, Active Start and Fundamentals, aim to develop a solid base of fundamental movement skills, build overall motor skills, self confidence, creativity and leadership through fun and exciting activities and games.

Our older children’s program, Learn to Train, focuses on the introduction of basic sports skills. Children are taught the basic skills of the sport in a fun and safe environment. Through the active lessons children are able to develop their physical literacy by refining their fundamental movement skills and developing basic sports skills.

An early active start enhances development of brain function, coordination, social skills, gross motor skills, emotions, leadership, and imagination. It also helps children build confidence, develop posture and balance, build strong bones and muscles, promote healthy weight, reduce stress, improve sleep, learn to move skillfully, and learn to enjoy being active. Active Start Program
Active Start Part 1 (2 – 4 year old)
Active Start Part 2: (5 – 6 year olds)

At this age, physical activity should always be fun, and part of the child’s daily life. Active play in a safe and challenging environment is the best way to keep children physically active. During the one hour session children will explore their physical world, and experience fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping, catching, throwing, etc. Best results happen when children are allowed to explore in a physically rich environment that challenges their physical abilities- just the kind of environment that Sportscan’s Active Start program’s provides.

Active Start #1: (Experiencing) This program is facilitated by our trained staff who are leaders in LTAD programming. The program requires active participation by parent’s through parent led play stations. Children not only develop essential motor skills but parents can transfer what they learn in the program to their home environment.

Active Start #2: (Play) This program is a series of instructor lead sessions. Instructors use play and simple activities to help children get involved in games and improve at their own rate . Active Start #2 aims to establish a sound base of fundamental movements so children can easily move into basic sport skill development.

FUNdamentals (Ages 7 - 8)
This is a critical stage for the development of physical literacy, and it is during this time that the foundations of many advanced sports skills are laid down. Skill development for children at this age is best achieved through a combination of structured and unstructured play in a safe and challenging environment; and quality instruction from knowledgeable leaders. Sportscan provides knowledgeable leaders that will provide the necessary activities for children to participate in physical activity in a fun and safe environment.

Level 1 SPIKES Volleyball (Ages 10-11)
Level 2 SPIKES Volleyball (Ages 12-14)

Our SPIKES sessions are styles of teaching volleyball and physical literacy that are rooted in the following key concepts;

• Maximize the number of times each participant gets to contact the ball - activities are designed to let them experiment with contacts (e.g. lots of one person, one ball exercises)

• Provide Variety - by asking athletes to contact the ball in a variety of different ways they will be better able to adapt to changing circumstances during game play. Work is done at various speeds (fast, slow), levels (high, low, medium), temporal qualities (hard, soft) and in different directions.

• Promote Success in Every Activity - athletes should never be asked to perform any activity that is beyond their skill level. For example, it is unrealistic to ask children to hit the ball before they know how to catch and throw it. Mini Volleyball provides athletes with REALISTIC GOALS so that they do not become frustrated with any of the activities.

• Modified Games - the "traditional" game of volleyball has been modified to give athletes a greater chance for activity and success. Problems such as immobility and inactivity of players not involved in the play are addressed with a variety of rule changes. Also, a number of progressions of the game are provided so that teachers/coaches can gradually introduce different skills as the athletes gain more control of the ball.

By de-emphasizing the technical aspect of volleyball, and given participants a chance to experiment with different ways of controlling the ball, we hope to provide a fun-based, positive learning experience for athletes.

Each session will have a certified coaches for every 12 athletes to ensure a great coach to athlete ratio. We look forward to seeing you all soon.
